In 2010, I was commissioned to write a critical essay for the Beyond Garment exhibition catalogue, curated by Dr Anne Farren and held at the Western Australian Museum – Maritime as part of the Perth Fashion Festival. My essay explored how contemporary fashion practice was expanding beyond the body into performance, installation, and conceptual experimentation. Drawing on case studies from Australian and international artists/designers, the essay argued that adornment had become a strategy for world-making, not merely self-expression, foregrounding identity, politics, and spatial negotiation. The work interrogated the boundaries between art, fashion, and design, asking where the garment ends and the body begins.
